Let Freedom Ring!

As we creep past the halfway point of June, I can’t help but look forward to the next upcoming holiday: the Fourth of July! This holiday gives many reasons to celebrate, so bust out your American flags and your best red, white and blue.

We all feel a little extra patriotic on Independence Day, inspiring us to honor our country in a variety of ways. A reason I love this holiday is because of its ability to unify uncommon people for one common celebration. Regardless of our backgrounds, the Fourth of July allows us all to be grateful for the place we call home.

So how will you be spending your fourth? Whether you are relaxing by the pool with family, or partaking in a hot dog eating contest with friends, we are free to enjoy the day however we see fit. If you are running dry on fun party ideas, remember that there will always be a place nearby to enjoy fireworks.

I hope all have a wonderful Fourth of July and count the blessings of your home.
Happy 243rd birthday America!

Team Up For Kids and K9s Was a Home Run

Top Houston Astros players teamed up Thursday, June 13 in support of causes close to their hearts and hosted a one-of-a-kind event at Tootsies. World Series Champion Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and 2017 American League MVP, José Altuve teamed up to serve as hosts for the casual night benefiting various children’s and animal organizations across the Houston community that raised nearly $400,000.

The hottest team in the majors turned out in full support of McCullers’ and Altuve’s charitable efforts as well as National Baseball Hall of Fame members Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. Guests bid on a variety of live and silent auction items including one of the most sought-after items—a dinner at B&B Butchers with Kara and Lance McCullers Jr., and Jose Altuve. Custom artwork pieces of Jose Altuve, Lance McCullers, Justin Verlander, Carlos Correa and Craig Biggio by renowned artists Michael Vahl had the players on stage to promote their individual paintings entertaining the guests and adding to the success of the evening. Ben Berg of B&B Butchers received rounds of applause for the dinners he donated to the event. A pop-up store by men’s clothier Robert Graham had many of the players and guests purchasing the latest styles.

BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions brought along precious pups available for adoption. Funds raised from the evening will benefit charitable causes that the hosts are passionate about, including Kara and Lance McCullers’ focus on animal rescue efforts through the Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation, and Giannina and José Altuve’s passion for helping children suffering from cancer through The Sunshine Kids Foundation. Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) was also a donor to the amazing event and their supporters came to encourage others to help rescue the animals.

Junior League of Houston Presents
Sara Houstoun Lindsey Award to Outstanding Member

The Junior League of Houston, Inc. was proud to present the 2019 Sara Houstoun Lindsey Award to Kathleen “Katie” Hackedorn. This annual award honors an outstanding active League member with a minimum of five years of service who exemplifies the Junior League’s mission, both within the organization and in the community at large. League member Amanda Hanks says that it was an obvious choice to nominate Hackedorn for the organization’s distinguished title. “I have had the immense pleasure of volunteering alongside Katie for the past five years and was immediately struck by her thoughtfulness and awareness of the needs of the Houston community,” Hanks said. “She is doing what she loves professionally and is also making an impact. It did not take me long to realize that Katie was the epitome of the definition of a League volunteer – something and someone I aspire to be.”

Volunteering was an important family tradition growing up, as Katie watched her parents and grandparents support their community in a number of ways. Hackedorn has volunteered with the Junior League in a variety of roles, working as a Kids’ Meals volunteer and Tea Room server and assisting as both a transfer mentor and transfer advisor. She has also served in numerous administrative placements including Nominating Committee Member, Ad Sales Chairman, Membership Training Chairman, Charity Ball Decorations Chairman, Publishing Chairman and Strategic Planning Study Chairman for Publishing.

Hackedorn is also involved in the Houston community, serving as a volunteer with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for over ten years. Other organizations that Hackedorn has donated her time, services and resources to include The Walk for Children’s Awareness, The American Heart Association, The Children’s Fund, Children’s Museum Houston, St. Luke’s Hospital and Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart. Hackedorn owns and operates a full-service stationery store, Katie & Co., which collected arts and crafts supplies during Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath to support the League’s efforts with the children’s area at Baker Ripley’s shelter at NRG Center.
