The Westin at The Woodlands’ Jeremy Smith was the only qualifier out of 31 Starbucks locations, ultimately advancing to this final regional round of the 2016 U.S. Starbucks Barista Championships. In the previous round, he impressed judges in the Barista Craft Sensory Skill and Barista Craft Technical Skill sections, both containing three different graded categories. Smith, who loves experimenting with brew and methods at home, first found his love of coffee as a child, alongside his dad. Currently attending Lone Star College, he hopes to own his own coffee shop and café in the future. Open to the public and free of charge, guests will have the opportunity to cheer on contestants while they compete against Starbucks baristas from around the region and state, including entrants from Dallas, Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Starbucks has recognized baristas and their beverage artistry through Barista Championships in Europe and across the China Asia Pacific region for the past few years. In 2015, for the first time, Starbucks did the same in America, introducing the U.S. Barista Championships. During this final round event at The Westin at The Woodlands, contestants will compete in Barista Craft, Signature Beverage and Personal Coffee Tasting categories to showcase their latte art skills, create their own signature beverage, using ingredients that currently exist in Starbucks stores, and provided a coffee tasting of their choosing.
