AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S HOUSTON HEART BALL CELEBRATES
THE ROMANCE OF HAVANA WITH A RECORD-BREAKING $2.6 MILLION

Matthew Goossen, Molly Crownover, Lacey Goosen and Jim Crownover

Houston’s well-heeled and most philanthropic crowd turned heads at the American Heart Association’s “Hearts in Havana” themed Heart Ball. The annual black-tie fundraising dinner celebrated the beauty of Central America and the romance of Valentine’s Day weekend under the leadership of Heart Ball Chairs Lacey and Matthew Goossen. The Goossens, recognized as the youngest Heart Ball chairs in the Houston event’s 33-year history, hosted an unforgettable evening for an exceptional cause – fighting heart disease and stroke with the American Heart Association.

Prior to the evening’s kickoff, the reception area outside the ballroom our guests perused the silent auction and were entertained by a three piece band playing Cuban-inspired music while stilt walkers provided by J & D Entertainment entertained the crowd with their colorful costumes celebrating the diverse and unique birds found in the Caribbean.

Christie Starr, Matt Starr, Carly Starr (Survivor) and Zoe Starr

During the event, a red-haired six-year-old girl named Carly shared her battle with a congenital heart defect. Diagnosed at 20 weeks in utero, mother Christie spoke to the sold out crowd about how research funded by the American Heart Association provided advancements in treatment to save her daughter’s life. The family shared how Carly’s love of the Disney movie “Brave” had a deeper meaning to them than she could ever imagine. The annual event presented by Silver Eagle Distributors and Lexus raised a record-breaking $2.6 million, exceeding the goal of $2.4 million. Contributing to this record-breaking success was an anonymous gift of $250,000 given in the room that night.

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO™ TRAILBLAZER COMMITTEE
HOSTED SOLD-OUT CROWD FOR 17TH ANNUAL TRAILBLAZER AWARDS
LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW

Tricia Koch, Marilyn DeMontrond, Jonnie Steffek, Kathleen Williams and Carol Sawyer (2016 Honorees)

Five well-accomplished Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo female volunteers were honored at the 17th Annual Trailblazer Awards Luncheon and Fashion Show on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016. Opening the event were Trailblazer Committee officer in charge, Sharleen Walkoviak, and chairman, Gretchen Gilliam. The sold-out crowd of 1,300 received a custom-designed pendant necklace featuring the Trailblazer Committee logo and a bee, a play on the theme of the event, “Bee A Trailblazer.” The event ballroom was transformed with stunning table settings in gold, creams and touches of green. Beautiful candelabras and gorgeous flowers set the mood for recipients Jonnie Steffek (Pearl Award), Marilyn DeMontrond, Tricia Koch, Carol Sawyer, and Kathleen Williams, as they walked the runway to a chorus of cheers from the audience. The honorees reflect the volunteer spirit that the Show is famous for and have shown their dedication to the organization through their time, talent and generosity. Each woman exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism at the highest level by serving on multiple committees over a span of at least 10 years, plus showing an above-and-beyond commitment to their community.

A highlight of the fashion show was a singer and two dancers who weaved their way through models during the opening and closing numbers.

Sharleen and Ron Walkoviak

As a tribute to outgoing Show vice president Sharleen Walkoviak, the Trailblazer Committee’s current and past chairmen, along with Walkoviak’s husband, Ron, surprised her with a special version of the Texas A&M University fight song, a nod to Walkoviak’s Aggie roots. Before and after lunch, guests shopped in the marketplace filled with goodies from 25 vendors, and before going home, were treated to musical performances.
