5 Tips for a Heartfelt Valentine’s
Day from Emily deAyala

Emily deAyala, MA, LPC, LMFT
AASECT Certified Sex Therapist
Houston Sex Therapy, PLLC
www.houstonsextherapy.com

Valentine’s Day is drawing near. While some love a full day of romance, many approach this holiday with a feeling of dread. We seem to have just caught a breath after the Christmas chaos, before that little cherub equipped with a bow and arrow comes tapping on the door, a reminder that should be nothing but a flutter in the heart, but instead transforms into tightness in the chest. Why do we allow ourselves to succumb to such pressure? How do you survive if you’re single? What can we do to make the most out of February 14th? Keep reading to find out my tips for a heartfelt V Day.

I’ll be honest. If it were up to me, my blanket recommendation would be to skip the whole thing. How sad is it that we do so little to express our love and appreciation for our partner that an entire holiday had to be created to remind us? I honestly believe (and can attest) that if we made more of an effort to show how much we care on a regular basis, we wouldn’t have to rely so heavily on one day. That being said, if you’re going to celebrate, you want to go about it the right way. Here are my recommendations for making it fun.

ONE
Plan ahead. Don’t scramble to make dinner reservations or buy the perfect gift.
Waiting until the last minute will bring tense energy into what should be a relaxing night. Remember what I just said about making an effort on a regular basis? I am going to let you on the ultimate tip, guys. Take 10 minutes, pull out your phone, and set sporadic reminders every 4 to 6 weeks to do something special for your partner. It could be something simple like picking up flowers on your way home, to a more grand gesture like a surprise weekend away. Trust me. This works. Even though you know you love you partner, life can easily get in the way, making it difficult to remember to show her. Setting reminders will help keep you on track.

TWO
Remember the Focus. Today should be about you as a couple. As a simple test, imagine going out sans cell phone. What feeling comes up when you think of this? If it’s panic, it’s probably a good sign that you should not only give this a try, but also that you’re way overdue for some alone time with your significant other. Make sure to postpone any heavy conversation topics for a later time. When was the last time you discussed your wishes, hopes, and dreams for the future? This kind of conversation over a good meal builds anticipation and excitement.

THREE
Speaking of anticipation and excitement, try to manage both along with your expectations. If it has been a while since you’ve connected romantically or sexually, don’t expect instant gratification in both arenas just because it’s Valentine’s Day. For women especially, foreplay starts long before you both hop in the sack. In fact, take the pressure of yourself by planning something jointly. Ask her what she’s in the mood for and how she’d like to celebrate. Coming up with an idea together can build excitement for you both.

FOUR
Love yourself and others! Don’t fret if you’re single on Valentine’s Day. Knowing you have an hour and a half massage planned after work will reduce the sting as your coworker gloats over her dozen red roses across the cubicle. Use this time to practice healthy self-love. We are all guilty of neglecting ourselves as we try to be there for everybody else. Don’t forget that love comes in all kinds of packages. You can use Valentine’s Day as a time to pick up that special bone your dog loves, call a friend who you haven’t reached out to in a while, or take your grandmother to lunch.

FIVE
Play! Chocolate and roses are so overdone. I think it’s important to get creative. Research shows that when we do something novel with our partner, chemicals are released that make us feel even more connected to each other. When was the last time you took a walk through the zoo or had a picnic in the park? Have you ever seen a burlesque show or invented a signature cocktail? Connecting with the parts of yourself that are creative, fun, playful, and inventive will not only strengthen your relationship but also develop a foundation of positive memories, which will help you get through lower points in the relationship.
