Aging Parents: Have you the courage to really talk to your parents about their future?

Many adults find themselves in the dark when it comes to their elderly parent’s finances and health… issues which are usually discovered and handled haphazardly in the midst of a crisis. Be proactive. Don’t let this happen to you!

If your parents are currently enjoying financial independence and are not yet burdened with challenging physical, emotional or financial difficulties, there’s no better time to talk with them. The major areas you need to discuss are:

· Current and future health risks along with risk management strategies (will there be enough money to pay for long term care if needed?)

· Current financial investments, pension, social security, annuity and real estate cash flow amounts and duration

· Future desired living model

· Estate Planning (income vs. lump sum asset distribution after death, directives, power of attorney, etc.)

The best time to talk to aging parents about these key four issues is just after a big event like a birthday, anniversary, or the New Year. Introduce the subject with a statement like:

“Dad, since you celebrated your 75th birthday last week, I’ve been thinking about how I can best support you and Mom when independence becomes a challenge. Can we begin a dialog about this today so I can better understand your desires?”

Asking your parents this question in this way achieves two important things:
· It indicates you have their best interest at heart and you want to help them.

· It may expose time or financial expectations they may have for you a
nd/or your siblings for their ongoing care.

For example, discovering your parents do not have an insurance policy for home health/assisted living (or do not comprehend the money needed to self-insure this personal care, such as bathing, dressing, feeding, transferring, or toileting) at the time of need can be financially and emotionally devastating to everyone, including you! Don’t put off talking to your parents today while they are still able to process the information. Listen carefully to their expectations and make a plan of action.

A number of my clients are enjoying their golden years and I encourage them to bring their adult children to our regular review meetings to discuss their plans for the future. If your parents have a financial advisor, ask them if they would include you in future meetings so you can assist them in the years ahead.
