Academy Award® Winning Film, Inocente Makes Texas Proud
Texas Native Ryan A. Brooks Shines Spotlight on Houston and Austin with Oscar Gold

Ryan A. Brooks

Academy Award® winning filmmaker Ryan A. Brooks celebrates in Oscar glory as part of the producing team for Best Documentary Short Subject Inocente and shines a spotlight on Houston and Austin. On receiving the ultimate honor for a labor of love, Brooks describes his excitement. “I’ve been involved with this film since its inception in 2008 -- it sure has been quite a journey and uphill battle. The culmination of the film winning the Oscar is truly a perfect example of the Little Film That Could.” He goes on to praise the dedication of directors, Sean Fine & Andrea Nix Fine by saying, “they absolutely flexed their creative muscles, not only are they great people, but they are hands down two of the most talented directors working in the world today.” Inocente is a powerful and captivating coming of age documentary that chronicles an undocumented, homeless teen as she uses art to overcome insurmountable obstacles. Inocente not only survives, but begins to thrive by taking control of her own life with the help of A.R.T.S. Despite her unimaginable circumstances, somehow she is able to escape through her vivid imagination to paint vibrant, colorful art that transforms her bleak world into that of a place full of bright, playful images. Of Inocente’s courage and perseverance, Brooks says, “Inocente’s ability to remain positive through extraordinary circumstances is one of her biggest strengths. She is able to find light in darkness and beauty in almost everything. Her resilience is incredibly inspiring.” The film has won numerous other awards and can be downloaded on iTunes.

Recipe for Success

Chef Barbara McKnight of Culinaire with Edward Wilkerson of Lafayette

Record crowds flooded Neiman's 3rd floor contemporary fashions area for Dress for Dinner benefiting Gracie Cavnar's Recipe for Success Foundation and to see the spring collection of Lafayette 148 presented by charming designer, Edward Wilkerson. Chairs Ceron and Todd Fiscus along with Neiman's GM Bob Devlin were happy hosts to the girl's night out, joined by a handful of dapper guys, including birthday boy Jeff Shell whose agency Neal Hamil supplied the models for the evening. The long-haired mannequins channeled Laura Petri meets Picasso in black and white, strutting in trim capri pants topped by long shirts with sleeves pushed up and waists cinched with wide belts. The monochromatic theme was punctuated with emerald green stilettos. Contrasting the skinny profile were flowing white palazzo pants and bandeaux tops under tropical print shirts revealing just a prim peek of midriff.. Thirty guests stayed on for dinner in the Mariposa, prepared by Chef Barbara McKnight of Culinaire. The long-committed member of Recipe for Success Foundation's Chefs Advisory Board, created a special three course menu to celebrate Mr. Wilkerson's recent trip to Africa with dishes inspired by Moroccan, Ethiopian and Tanzanian cuisine. Click the link to view a preview of their upcoming event on May 8, at Tootsies.
