Release Your Inner Goddess

Creative Couturier Don O”Neill has the luck of the Irish on his side. He was born in a charming seaside town in County Kerry, Ireland, in his parent’s bed and breakfast, with a castle across
the road. He was surrounded by beauty inside and out, and knew at an early age that he wanted
to design. His lovely Mother had a fabulous collection of designer pieces that were given to her by
her American employer when she was a nanny in New York, as a young single woman. After
college, culinary school, and a fashion design contest, Mr. O’Neill left Ireland to begin his fashion career. His tenacity and talent led him first to London, then Paris at Christian Lacroix, then New York for Carmen Marc Valvo, and later he headed up Badgley Mischka Platinum. He launched
his own line, THEIA, in 2009. Theia is taken from the Greek goddess of light, mother of Helios,
the Sun, Selene, the Moon, and Eros, the dawn. Mr. O’Neill wants women to look beautiful, feel beautiful, and not have to spend a fortune to get that way. His clothes are timeless, whether it is a day or evening piece. When you wear a Theia creation, you will feel like a goddess in your own right, and who doesn’t deserve to be a goddess.

A Night Out benefitting Dress for Success

The Houston chapter of Dress for Success had a big year in 2012. They have a new 16,600 square foot building located in the Upper Kirby District, and are on track to receive LEED certification. The building was designed by Ziegler Cooper Architect and built by D.E. Harvey Builders – and with their help they were able to secure more than $650,000 in in-kind donations. Houston is proud to be the first affiliate in a worldwide network of more than 120 agencies, to purchase land and own a home. Since moving to their new facility they have seen a significant increase in services provided to underprivileged women in our community. They have strengthened several community partnerships including Banana Republic, who not only helped make our store have a retail feel and helped with the ambience – staging different display pieced and mannequins. Banana Republic also started a quarterly seminar with volunteers teaching them how to dress every body type, etc. And during the holidays, they adopted some of the single mother families in the Professional Women’s Group and gave them presents for their children.

Each year, A Night Out maintains its role as an integral fundraiser for Dress for Success Houston, and is organized through the combined efforts of Dress for Success Houston and the Gardere Women’s Council, a business networking and professional development organization established by the firm to support its female attorneys and clients. Members of the Gardere Women’s Council, which include this year’s event chair, Rachel Powitzky Steely, are leaders within the firm and legal community and are also active contributors to other civic and community initiatives. “The Women’s Council is proud to contribute to A Night Out each year and elevate awareness of Dress for Success Houston’s mission to provide life-changing services to women transitioning into employment,” said Steely. “A Night Out is a wonderful celebration of the successes that women can achieve in their lives and in the workplace with the help of simple, yet much-needed resources such as business attire, education and emotional support, which collectively give them the confidence they need to conquer the working world.”
“We are pleased to partner with Gardere once again for A Night Out and to be aligned with a group of women within the firm so dedicated to helping others find success in their own careers,” said Nancy Levicki, Dress for Success Houston president and co-founder. “The funds from compassionate donors, like those who attended the well-planned event, start by shaping our clients into professionals through their wardrobe. However, these women are impacted far beyond this, gaining life-changing confidence that can help them secure a dream job, escape difficult life situations, and learn how to be self-sufficient.”
