At an evening full of fashion, fun and fabulous frocks, Tinsley Mortimer, well known socialite, designer and reality t.v. star, delighted guests with the debut of her novel, Southern Charm at Neiman Marcus, Houston Galleria. Hosted by Lindsey Love and Elizabeth Petersen, and in collaboration with HPNOTIQ Harmonie, Houston’s premier retailer welcomed a crowd of enthusiastic fashionistas to this invitation-only event. The already delightful shoe salon was transformed into a purple paradise as guests sipped on Southern Charm and Minty Julep cocktails, while treating themselves to delectable treats from the magnificently designed candy station and Neiman’s Mariposa restaurant. While chatting with Tinsley prior to the book signing, she talked about how the book came to fruition. Having been featured for her style in publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire, she was originally going to write a style guide to show women how to “dress like a girl”. After further thought, the idea for Southern Charm was birthed, somewhat channeling Tinsley’s own life as a Southern girl who made it big on the New York social scene. Tinsley is enjoying this time in her life and looking forward to promoting her book across the country. In addition to her new role as author, she currently designs a handbag line for the Japanese company Samantha Thavasa and a clothing line for the Japanese company, Riccimie. Her one piece of professional advice is to pursue something that you really love and always believe in yourself.

A Good Yankee

Purdue grad Paul Miller loved hanging out at the student union and wanted his restaurant to have that same feel of welcome and a place to relax with friends. Chef/Partner Juan Arellano helped Paul create The Union Kitchen, now with 2 locations. one in Bellaire and the other Memorial. Their food is global cuisine with ingredients from local farmers. Stop in for a meal or a glass of wine and an appetizer.

Chaired by Luvi Wheelock and husband Carlos and Katherine and Bill Phelps, guests flocked to the Houston Country Club for the second annual Celebrating Triumph Luncheon to show their support of the Center for Success and Independence and meet featured speaker Kate Walsh. Best known for her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery on the ABC drama Private Practice, the actress, activist and entrepreneur shared the trials she faced both as an adolescent and in her acting career along with the uplifting message of fighting for what you believe. Her unique sense of humor and honesty easily resonated with the crowd as she encouraged attendees to support the Center. Emcee Rebecca Spera of ABC’s Mirror Mirror kept the event running smoothly as she opened the luncheon, introduced speakers and reminded guests of the several fabulous raffle and auction items. Other speakers included the Center’s Clinical Director and one of the co-founders Dr. Marylou Erbland, alumni parent Barbara Dwyer and Executive Vice President of Government and Public Affairs of event sponsor BP America, Inc. Crystal Ashby. Celebrated stylist Michael Kemper, honored at the luncheon for his decades of commitment to the Houston community, stood up to say a few words and congratulated his parents in the audience on their 69th wedding anniversary. Funds raised through the luncheon will further The Center’s mission to operate a 44 bed, 24‐hour residential facility using a multidisciplinary, evidence‐based approach to adolescent mental health.

The young and fashionable packed Casa de Novia for the debut of the Vera Wang
, the largest collection of Vera Wang gowns in Texas. The champagne flowed as heavily as the ohhs and ahhs as models dawned the latest looks from the famed designer. Cordua provided a spread with Spanish flare containing dolce de leche, bread pudding, chicken drummettes and shrimp skewers. Owner Luvi Wheelock, looking fabulous in a tangerine fitted frock, helped brides-to-be into dresses detailed with Wang’s signature sophisticated drama, feminine detailing and modern design. Many of the dresses weren’t your usual plain white gown but came in raging red hues. A dress drive was held where attendees brought their past bridesmaid dresses to benefit Always A Bridesmaid, a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist less fortunate high school girls in the Houston area by providing them with donated bridesmaid dresses to attend their Homecoming and Prom. The event was hosted by Houston’s fashion up-and-comers Jennie Chase, Annie Dishman, Stacy Freeman, Jennifer Hobson, Mallory Martindale, Kate McCarroll, Emily Moise, Laura Park, Sissy Shuffield and Katie Wooldridge.
